Becoming the 11th Disney Princess and what it means for Merida

Merida from Disney’s “The Brave” will become the 11th official princess on Saturday at Walt Disney World.

Disney turns the tomboyish Merida into a very glamorous and elegant version of herself and in some photos taking away the awesome bow and arrows that is Merida’s signature weapon in the movie. From “Inside the Magic” the change is meant to help Disney sell their products.

There’s a huge controversy over the change in appearance as many Disney fans feel that Merida is meant to be tomboyish, free-spirited, and herself. There’s even a petition to “Keep Merida Brave,” asking Disney to reconsider the character’s redesign by “A Mighty Girl,” a blog and online girl empowerment marketplace, and has already surpassed 50,000 signatures by Friday afternoon.
